Note on Wife: Ada Amelia SPEED (2) - shared note
ELIZABETH MARY PEACE made a trip to Durban, South Africa to convalesce after a chest operation 1936. 24 SEPT 1932 Englishman Thomas Druce returned to his new home in Durban South Africa in SS Umvuma after visiting his sister Auntie Nellie, married to Uncle Joseph Speed who had an optician business in Bournemouth.
23 NOV 1933 Harry Shreeve, son of Auntie Ada, went to Durban in SS Umvoti and stayed with the Druce family before getting married and settling in Pietermaritzberg. Family legend is that Auntie Ada won some State Lottery money, enabling her to pay for Harry to join her, but the dates don’t fit as it seems that Harry was there before his mother. 17 OCT 1936 Mary went to Durban in SS Umvuma, with 60 passengers,as an Art Student, accompanied by Auntie Ada Shreeve (nee Speed) who was going to marry widower Tom Druce. They married on 26 APR 1938. 11 JUNE 1937 Mary arrived back on her own in London from Cape Town in SS Dunluce Castle, a Union Castle Liner with about 350 passengers. The SS Umvuma and sister ship SS Umvoti were cargo ships carrying about 40 passengers and belonged to Bullard King and Co who were taken over by Union Castle.
