Individual Note (shared)

Walter was head gardener at Penrhyn Castle in North Wales for over 58 years and to three successive Lords Penrhyn. His gardens held a high reputation and at one time were regarded as the best in Britain. He was not a specialist but had a special liking for roses and grapes. He was a judge in the champion class for grapes at Shrewsbury for many years.

He was one of the original horticulturists to receive the Victoria Medal of Honour (VMH) in 1897, and his kindness and genial personality were greatly missed.
