From Alec his son: "Thomas went to Taranto about 1886/7 and could have been conscripted when he was 18 in 1888, and when the Italians were sending more troops to Massawa in Ethiopia"

"ON looking up the correspondence re Thomas and the Italian army I find an error in their final letter.

They had got the date and name both slightly wrong and were asked to check again.i can find no further lettersand must ask Guy.

We used www.italiamerica.org through their agent in Brussels Nicola Colella in 2003,and I could ask her if she did chase up the correct details."

later:

Family name: Peace

Given names: Thomas Shirley

Born: September 2nd, 1870 at Rotherham, England

"He said that he went to Taranto, Italy, after leaving school, in about 1886

He was in the Italian Army and went to Massawa in Eritrea and worked on a railway.

The above are the only facts that I know.

Family memories say he talked of being an Interpreter for a French firm building a bridge in Taranto harbour.

Rotherham was a steel manufacturing town and could have supplied steel for this project, perhaps giving him a personal contact and reason to go to Taranto.

He got to Italy on a cargo ship, which may have carried the steel, and signed-on as Ships Doctor.

In the mid nineteen thirties he saw a newspaper photo of a burning ship in the River Thames and told me that it was the ship that had taken him to Italy. I have not followed this up.

I assumed that he was called into the Army when he was 18 but he may have volunteered.

In 1940 (following his return to England), he was worried that the English authorities would learn of his Italian army service and intern him as a spy."

"My father may have been in the 1888 Leva in Taranto where he was working and went with them to Massawa in Ethiopia"

- Alec jan 2008

I guess that this might have been the reason that he shared so little information with his family, about this part of his life. He died 13 March 1942 so probably never got past that fear. - Richard Epworth

In 1887 he was in Matlock Bath. In 1891 he was resident in Matlock Bath. He died of Gout on 8 May 1892 in Matlock Bath. 1,2

Since Edward was born at Great Abington in 1834 there is no trace of him until his marriage to Elizabeth Parish in 1868.

The marriage took place at St Leonard's, Shoreditch in Middlesex and they both gave 12 Worship Street as their address. He was a gardener at the time but there are no other facts to enlarge upon the situation.

By the following year, 1869, they had moved to Saffron Walden in Essex to an address given as Thaxted Road.

In 1875 they were in Cambridge with Edward as nurseryman at Gonville Nurseries on New (Newnham?) Road.

(Newnham Rd 1881 census is RG 11/1670 4, not looked yet, also there is a new road in Sawston)

1882 saw them in Claines, Worcestershire, and Edward a Nursery Manager living at 2 Hingham Villas, Droitwich Road.

Around 1883 Edward and his wife arrived in Matlock Bath with eight children, and Lilian was the only child born there, on 30 May 1886.

They ran a public house called The Old Wine Vaults on North Parade (now a pottery shop) and Edward worked as a landscape gardener and surveyor.

He was soon called on to lay out the 16 acres of gardens around the Royal Pavilion, which was situated on rising ground off Temple Walk, originally a promenade between the old Matlock Bath opened in 1698 and the Temple Hotel.

The Royal Pavilion was opened by Lord Edward Cavendish on 2 July 1884,and was a huge iron and glass building 228 feet frontage and capable of sheltering 2,000 people, with terraced gardens in front. Admission was 6 pence and season tickets were available for the regular musical concerts that catered for the large numbers of day visitors that came to Matlock when the railway came in 1849.

At 3.30 pm a grand luncheon was held at the New Bath Hotel, opened in1745, attended by Lord Edward Cavendish and many other local gentry. The Press said "The very important work of laying out the grounds was devolved upon Mr Edward Speed, and all who have watched the interesting process of transformation under Mr Speed's direction can only admire the tact and energy displayed in the different works".

In his speech welcoming Lord and Lady Cavendish the main speaker said "To Mr Speed they were especially indebted for by his assistance they had turned a stony wilderness into a Garden of Eden".

The Royal Pavilion and its gardens no longer exist. The site is now Gulliver's Kingdom amusement park and Temple Road car park.

By 1887 Edward held the position of Surveyor to Matlock Bath Local Board and was involved in the creation of gardens along the riverside to celebrate Queen Victoria's Jubilee.

He was also involved privately in local concerts, such as one on 19February 1887 at the Skating Rink to support The Young Men's Mutual Improvement Society.

Board meetings continued in March and on 2 April the Surveyor Mr Speed submitted a plan for laying out the pleasure ground and this was accepted, and called the Jubilee Promenade.

The Jubilee Promenade was a popular feature of Matlock Bath until the A6 road widening in the 1960's and 1970's in which most of it was destroyed. The Jubilee bridge still stands.

Since the marriage of Edward and Elizabeth at Shoreditch, Middlesex, on 26 October 1868 they had nine children, Lilian Elizabeth being the only one born at Matlock Bath.

From Nicholas Pendrigh Genes Reunited: Now looking at your ancestor Edward. He was also a publican and ran a pub in Matlock Bath (The three Bells?) in 1891 census. It obviously ran in the family! He started like his brothers Thomas and Joseph as a gardener; working in Leyton Essex in 1851 census. He married Elizabeth Parish from Saffron Walden in Shoreditch in 1868 and moved back to Saffron Walden then on to Cambridge and then to Benbow? Worcestershire where your grandmother was born and thence to Matlock. In 1881 census Edward Speed was staying with brother Joseph Speed at the Devonshire Arms. Also staying there was Rose Speed born 1874 a niece who was probably their brother Thomas Speed's daughter from Chatsworth House, and Walter Speed born 1875 a nephew who might have been Rose's brother.Their unmarried sister Betsy born 1819 Abington was also living there. Joseph is described as a Licensed Victualler and Farmer. In 1901 census They are running the Old Vaults pub in Matlock.Edward is not in census so he had probably died. His wife Elizabeth is the publican.Your grandmother is living there. You probably know all this already so I apologise, but I find this kind of investigation fascinating.
